Toytown and Gugnuncs

The Toytown episodes in Childrens' Hour were extremely Popular, not only with children but were greatly enjoyed by many adults; including some overseas listeners.

The stories were centred around the exploits of Larry the Lamb and his faithful friend Dennis the Duchshund.

The other principal characters being Ernest the Policeman (whose utterances usually began with ''Nah then, nah then, if you two animiles don't want your names an addresses took...........), Mr. Grouser (who complained about everyone and everything, and always began with ''It's a disgrace and I shall certainly speak to the Mayor about this'.), the Mayor of Toytown; the Mayor of Arkvillr; the Magician (whose spells usually went hilariously wrong) and the Inventor (whose inventions nearly always had disasterous results).

Around this time the Daily Mirror had a childrens' page, much of which was devoted to the activities of Pip (a terrier); Squeak (a penguin) and Wilfred (a rabbit).  Centered on these charactures was a childrens' club called The Gugnuncs.  Each member was issued with a badge with two rabbits ears in gold on a blue background.  Members would greet each other with 'Gugnunc', to which the other would reply 'Ick Ick Pah Boo'.
